“The Shack” ~ William Young

This is perhaps the best, and certainly one of the most easily read (for the mind, maybe not the heart) book I have read. It is fiction, yet filled with truth.

The author originally simply tried to tell a story to his kids which he printed out to give them for Christmas. It is beautiful, and is now a top seller with a movie version in the works. (I hope the movie does not water this down though).

As an Adventist, you will appreciate the theology in ways you may not have really heard before. Sure, parts will stretch you, comfort you, astound you and bring emotion you know is there but feel hopeless to reveal even to yourself.

Blue Like Jazz: Non Religious thoughts on Christian Spirituality

One of the reviews I read on this book right after I had thoroughly enjoyed it, was from a guy perhaps a little more straight down the evangelical line than me... he said (something like), “this guy wonders and meanders and never ever gets to the point.”

I think one reason why I liked this book is because it wandered and meandered and never spoon fed me any points whatsoever!

Donald Miller, the author grew up in the religious culture, but never got his questions answered. Then he started moving around and I think has come to the realization that it is not so much about getting questions answered, as much as it is just asking the questions.

If religion/church has hurt you, and blinded you to the awesomeness of God, then this is a great place to start.

Before he got famous, he wrote a book about traveling the country with a friend in a rather suspect vw bus. This was a fantastic book that never sold, until Blue Like Jazz became a best seller. It has now ben reprinted under the title - Through Painted Deserts: Light, God, and Beauty on the Open Road. If Blue Like Jazz is too mumbo jumbo for your tastes, then this is just a great story . . .

Messiah

If contemporary literature has lost some of its form and depth for you, and no one seems to really paint a picture of Jesus himself - then this book on the life of Jesus might speak to parts of your soul you are currently unaware of.

For those who are aware of Ellen whites books, but find them hard to read, this is a paraphrase of her work called - Desire of Ages. You do not have to enter the whole prophet debate to get a great deal out of this book. It has a depth and meaning not present in many of the materials being made available today.

It’s been a while since I have read this now. But this is a great book for peeling away much of the unnecessary baggage that has been put between you and God over the centuries. Authored by Rob Bell, one of my “from afar” mentors. If you like this, try one of his Nooma DVD’s too.

What’s So Amazing About Grace

Phillip Yancy has written some good books but this is his best. Any view of God should start with Grace, and that is what you get here. Many good stories, and impact insights that will leave you smiling on the inside.

You’ve probably read this book. But if you haven’t, go do it!
